Because he is a straight white guy and Tumblr isn’t always right.
Yup. A lot of people like to ignore all the good things he does simply because he is part of the privileged. Never mind that he flat out acknowledges this in Same Love. (“I may not be the same, but that’s not important.”)
Reasons that people dislike Macklemore that don’t simply boil down to “he’s part of the privileged and Tumblr just haaaaaates that”:
- He talks about the rap industry being homophobic without acknowledging LGBT+ rappers.*
- He talks about the rap industry being homophobic without acknowledging the large number of rappers known to be supportive of the LGBT+ community.
- Queer POC in an industry in which the majority of performers are POC are being overshadowed by a straight white guy who is making no effort to use his spotlight to point out that they exist.
- In fact, when Macklemore won an award for “Same Love” at the MTV Awards, he had a perfect opportunity to let a lesbian performer — his partner on the song, Mary Lambert — speak to one of the biggest audiences they’ve ever had regarding the issue. He didn’t give her the mike.
- People who have done some very thoughtful analysis of “Same Love“‘s lyrics have pointed out several problematic aspects of those lyrics which, when sung by a straight white male, present serious issues.
- A large number of his fans acknowledge his privilege (look, he spelled it out in a song and everything!), and yet somehow manage not to all at the same time by wondering why the LGBT+ community could possibly be mad about “Same Love” or his supposed support.
- A large number of his fans don’t seem to notice or acknowledge that the rap world has queer performers and performers who are vocally and monetarily supportive of the LGBT+ community.
- A large number of his fans keep commending him for talking about “the real issues” and knocking the rest of the rap community for only singing about “booze, guns, and whores,” as if … oh, thank God this straight white guy showed up to rap about gay people! These black people only sing about drinking, drugs, and sluts! (Which makes me want to shove Tupac’s entire collection of songs directly into their ears, and that’s just for a start.)
- A large number of his fans have no problem with the fact that he’s getting huge amounts of airplay for a song which argues against suppressing the LGBT+ community, while not letting his lesbian partner on the song have a louder voice alongside him in the media.
- A large number of his fans seem to be angry that the LGBT+ community is not more grateful for his help. Which … hell, I’m straight and it makes me want to throw things at people. I can’t imagine how irritating it is to everybody else.
- Basically, his fans. Because writing an LGBT+-positive song from a point of privilege and donating money to LGBT+ causes does not negate the negative aspects of his and their behavior since the song has gained popularity.
I’m sure there are other reasons I am missing, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head, and I will admit I do tend to scroll past most mentions of his name because I’ve become used to the expectation that they’re going to be accompanied by people being smug offended douchebags who feel like they should get a pat on the back for doing the LGBT+ community a fucking favor. Still.
* My apologies for not being more inclusive with the community shorthand. I just woke up and I don’t want to miss any, so alas, it’s probably better if I just use the plus sign at the end. Just keep in mind that includes genderqueer, queer, intersexed, pansexual, asexual, etc. But not allies, because … seriously, for fuck’s sake.

So… Lemme get this straight-
6 out of your 11 points on why he’s a problem are… his fans. You know, the millions of individuals who can make their ow decisions about things?
I mean fuck, what do you want rom the man? Is he supposed to have some kind of control over his fans? Is his use of “white privilege” only acceptable if he only uses it to negate his own right to a livelihood?
I will never stop laughing at people who talk about like it’s not homophobic. Some of those rappers who are mainstream straight men, frequently use “gay” and “faggot” as insults in their raps, have no problem using “dyke” or whatever, but because they’re black, no shots fired, huh?
He’s a fault for not bringing up “the large number of rappers known to be supportive of the LGBT+ community” and not “acknowledging LGBT+ rappers”.
Well, question, why don’t we critique those mainstream rappers for not talking about the LGBT+ rappers? Why are we only holding Macklemore accountable? Why don’t we talk about mainstream raps fetishization of lesbian and bisexual women as well, particularly some of those rappers who are supposedly supportive. Also, what have THEY done that had a tangible effect on helping the LGBT+ community, hmm? How have any of their songs or albums directly helped?

Look, either critique everyone evenly, or don’t do it. Don’t just give responsibility to the white boy, who incidentally has only been mainstream for about a year, while most of those others rappers have been in fame for MUCH longer.
